Hilda Mason
DC Councilmember
Hilda H. M. Mason was a pioneering educator, civil rights advocate, and one of the founding leaders of the DC Statehood Party, whose legacy continues through today's DC Statehood Green Party. A steadfast champion of District of Columbia statehood, democratic self-government, and social justice, Mason helped shape the Party from its earliest years alongside fellow founders Julius W. Hobson, Josephine Butler, and others.
Following Julius Hobson's passing in 1977, she succeeded him on the Council of the District of Columbia and went on to win election in her own right, becoming one of the most recognizable voices for statehood, neighborhood empowerment, and equitable public policy. Throughout her career, Mason fought for affordable housing, quality public education, civil rights, and environmental responsibility, leaving a lasting legacy of principled leadership and grassroots activism that continues to inspire the DC Statehood Green Party today.
